How Age Is Calculated

The most common mistake is subtracting birth year from current year β this gives the wrong answer for anyone who hasn't had their birthday yet this year. A person born December 31, 1995 is still 28 on December 30, 2024, not 29.
The correct approach: calculate complete years since birth by finding the most recent past birthday. Then calculate complete months since that birthday. Then calculate remaining days. This gives a precise "X years, Y months, Z days" answer that matches how we intuitively count age.

In the traditional Korean age system (μΈλλμ΄, "counting age"), a person is 1 year old at birth (not 0), and everyone gains a year on January 1 regardless of their birthday. This means a baby born on December 31 is already 2 years old by the next day (January 1). South Korea officially transitioned to the international age system in June 2023 for all legal purposes, though the traditional system remains in informal cultural use.
