How Countdown Calculations Work
A countdown timer calculates the difference between the current moment and a target date/time. The result can be expressed as a total number of days, or broken down into days, hours, minutes, and seconds remaining. The calculation uses real-time timestamps, so a live countdown updates every second as time passes.
The simplest form — "days until" — counts complete days from midnight today to midnight on the target date. This is the most practical measure for planning (how many more sleeps until Christmas?), while a full hours/minutes/seconds countdown is more appropriate for precise events with a set time.
